Paul Thumbies are the original upright handlebar mount for bar
end shifters. They do not include the shifter, but are designed to be
used with indexed bar end (aka
barcon) shifters
from Shimano, Campagnolo, SRAM and others. These shifters are readily
available for 8, 9 and 10-speeds, and most have a friction option for
everything else.
Admittedly, we weren't sure at first if these would be a good
idea or kind of gimmicky, but it was love at first test ride. The thumb
shifting of old came back instantly and the bike shifted more precisely
and smoothly than ever before. These feel much better in our opinion
than trigger or twist shifters.
Mountain Thumbies fit standard mountain bike handlebars, but
will work with most anything that has a 22.2mm (⅞ inch) diameter. The
shifter boss is raised from the bar to give clearance for bulky
two-bolt brake levers, and the hinged clamp makes installation easy.
Three versions are available to pair with Shimano bar end,
Campagnolo bar end, or SRAM TT shifters. Each company has their own
unique shifter boss fitting and they are incompatible with one another.
With the addition of our Silver
Shifter Adapters, Shimano Mountain Thumbies will work with
the ratcheting Silver Shifters available from Rivendell. These shifters
work just like the old Suntour Power Ratchet shifters, but better.
The bar end shifters themselves are not included with the
Thumbies, sorry. Please make sure to order the proper Thumbies to go
with your brand of shifters.
